GRECC

The focus of Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) is to improve and disseminate knowledge regarding the medical, psychological, and social needs of older veterans (65 years of age and older). This is done through integration of innovative research, educational programs, training of health care personnel, and clinical care for older veterans.

Research
A major focus is basic biomedical aging research, with research areas ranging from delineation of mechanisms involved in age-related loss of muscle mass and steroid hormone production to cellular and molecular aspects of age-associated neurodegenerative diseases. There also is applied clinical research, with an emphasis on metabolic diseases of the elderly and development of psychotherapies for late life depression and anxiety. Another major focus is health services implementation and medical informatics research in automated clinical knowledge bases and in natural language processing of text in electronic health records.

Education & Training
The education programs are targeted for students, medical residents, fellows, clinical faculty, VA staff, VA patients, and members of the surrounding community. Such programs include weekly seminars, sponsored conferences, and joint programs in collaboration with the Stanford Geriatric Education Center.

The GRECC provides a physician geriatric fellowship program and an internal medicine residency training rotation in geriatrics. The VA sponsors associated clinical trainee positions in social work, psychology, nursing, and other affiliated health professions. GRECC also offers advanced research fellowship training for applicants from medicine, social work, nursing, pharmacy, psychology, and other affiliated health professional backgrounds.

Clinical
GRECC health care providers specialize in providing outpatient care to older veterans with chronic medical problems common in the aging population. They provide both primary geriatric care and medical and psychosocial services in an interdisciplinary setting to veterans in need of comprehensive team evaluation and care coordination. The goals of clinical care focus on optimizing quality of life and maximizing functional status.
